Who We Are

Hello!

We are the International Service Devils, a group of students at Arizona State University, Polytechnic Campus, working on organizing a service trip to Costa Rica. We are currently planning our trip and are scheduled to go during our Spring Break in March. We will be going to Providencia and will be working on a variety of projects while we are there.

The town of Providencia is a tranquil town with little access to the resources we take for granted here in the United States such as paved roads. For the last six year the citizens of Providencia with the help of various volunteer groups have been constructing a paved road for access to the center of town. Where this road is being constructing is an area of high mudslide activity, once this road is constructed it will allow the population to travel to the town market a lot easier and it will help cut back on the mudslides/ landslides that take place during certain times of year. We plan to assist in this endeavor leaving our mark on this project by hopefully putting the next building blocks in place for ultimate completion of the project.

Providencia is known for their coffee-production and relies on the harvesting of the bean greatly for its economy. Recently a few citizens of the town have taken a very instrumental step to sustaining the regions area for future generations by taking their old coffee bean farms and converting them into ecological sustainable farms. Our main goal is to spread this action in two ways; the first is by actually educating the population on the long term benefits of green harvesting and sustainable harvesting practices. The second is assist in the implementation in creating these farms for as many citizens as possible in attempts that they will begin to use ecological methods in harvesting their coffee beans so not only their economy continues to grow but also the durability of their cash crop.

This is a snap shot of our plan. We plan on chronicling our journey and our time in Costa Rica on this blog. Please join us!

Thank you,

The International Service Devils
